HVAC Facts and Information
The meaning behind HVAC
Let’s be honest, we may have all heard the term HVAC thrown around from time to time, but it’s a term that not many people are familiar with. Despite the term HVAC not being one of those daily conversation topics, it doesn’t lessen its importance.
So, let’s get to it— HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. So, what’s the big deal? Well, it’s one of those things you don’t think much about until well— you don’t have it.
Think back to those cold days during the winter when you’d walk through the front door to a warm house and you’d instantly feel better as soon as the warm air hit your skin. Or, on those scorching hot summer days and then you’d walk into the grocery store and get a refreshing burst of cold air. Yep— that’s the air conditioner and heating system working their magic.
The “V” in HVAC stands for ventilation, how does that correlate to heating and air conditioning? Ventilation provides better indoor air quality and helps remove various contaminates from the air, as well as temperature control and oxygen replenishment. All these components come together to make sure your systems are working together to provide maximum comfort.
The key pieces to an HVAC system
When you own a home, it’s inevitable that eventually something in your household will require some sort of repair or replacement. Your HVAC system is one of those things that will last a long time if you take good care of it, but like most things, will eventually need to be replaced. Trust us, you won’t want to spend much time without a working HVAC system!
There are several key parts to your system that we recommend you familiarize yourself with, so in the event you ever need to contact an HVAC professional to replace or repair your system, you’ll have a better understanding of how your system operates.
- Air Return
The air return is vital to the ventilation of your HVAC system. It marks the beginning of the ventilation system, sucking in air, drawing in through the filter and then passing it through the main system.
- Blower
The blower is simple and does exactly what you would image it to do. The blower of your HVAC system will draw in the warm air through the main section of the unit.
- Coils
When you hear coils, think cooling. On the outdoor unit, coils will work with the refrigerant to cool the air that passes through.
- Compressor
The compressor and coils work hand in hand with each other. The compressor’s job is to convert gas to liquid send it to the coils. What a team!
- Ducts
Ducts run all throughout your home. These are the channels that the cold and warm air passes through.
- Exhaust Outlets
The exhaust outlets is where the exhaust is created by the heating system and then released from the system.
- Filter
The filter is very important and a key piece to your system’s efficiency. The filter is connected to the air return in which the air is pushed through. Changing your HVAC system’s filter periodically is very important!
- Outdoor Unit
The outdoor unit is the piece of the equipment that most people are familiar with because it’s easy to see. The outdoor unit holds the fan, which provides air flow.

Which kind of HVAC system is best for my home?
If you have a forced air HVAC system in your home, we recommend you use a furnace, heat pump or AC unit as your method of heating and cooling. Mini-split systems are compact in size making them a great solution for smaller homes or if your home is set up for an electric HVAC system.
How do I get the most out of my HVAC system?
Your HVAC system is complex and is full of extensive systems that keep your home running comfortably. We recommend that you have annual maintenance performed on your HVAC system every year and let a trained HVAC professional handle the complicated stuff. If you have an outdoor unit, it’s a good idea to remove debris away and off your unit to keep it running properly. We also recommend changing the filter on with your HVAC system approximately every 3 months. This will promote your system’s air flow and keep it running at high efficiency.
